About Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln suffered many losses: his mother, an infant brother, his sister and her baby, his first sweetheart, and two of his four young sons. Now, in the bitter struggle to save the Union, the president must sacrifice thousands of young men.

The entries for President Lincoln are adapted from The Lincoln Log. This chronicle of writings by and about the sixteenth president is organized day by day from 1809 to 1865. You can find The Lincoln Log on The Papers of Abraham Lincoln, a project of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. This site is co-sponsored by the Center for State Policy and Leadership at the University of Illinois at Springfield and the Abraham Lincoln Association.

Abraham Lincoln did not keep a diary. The Lincoln Log from which these entries have been adapted details every documented fact of Lincoln’s life. This material comes from his letters, notes, telegraph dispatches, and speeches, as well as the reminiscences of others.
